HATHRAS  DM'S  GESTURE  DRAWS  FLAK  FROM  SOCIAL ACTIVISTS

Hathras district magistrate Shamim Ahmed Khan's generous gift of  a cycle-rikshaw to a 40-year old widow, to enable her to earn her livelihood by ferrying passengers through this conservative town, has drawn more flak than praise from social activists here.

 

After the death of Rabia's  husband Sharafat, who was a rikshaw puller,  due to prolonged illness, the burden of supporting her mother, a younger brother and her own eight year old daughter fell on her fragile shoulers. She somehow managed to struggle and earn a pittance by pulling a rented rikshaw. But when she got her own rikshaw today, she was full of tears of joy and profusely thanked the district magistrate for his generosity.

 

While appreciating the DM's gesture, social activists in Hathras wondered why the district authorities could not arrange for a battery rikshaw for Rabia. "A cycle-rikshaw for a widow only reflects the height of insensitivity. It is against socialist principles. Dr Lohia opposed cycle rikshaws," said activist SK Singh of Hathras.

 

Neeraj Chakrapani, another activist said "in the traditional mileu of Hathras, a woman cycling a rikshaw through the narrow lanes  would not only look awkward but would be grossly inhuman too. The DM could have called for donations to arrange for a battery or electric-rikshaw for the lady."

 

"Everywhere, cycle rikshaws are being phased out and being replaced with battery operated rikshaws. The Hathras district magistrate could have thought of a better idea to help Rabia, than donating a cycle rikshaw which for a lady her age could be an ordeal," commented a school teacher Meera Gupta.
